The Bib That Goes Away: The Story Behind Parasol Bibs & Placemats

Innovation at Parasol doesn't happen in a boardroom; it happens at the kitchen table. The inspiration for the new Disposable Bibs (available online now) and Table Placemats (arriving in March)—didn't come from a market research study. It came from a conversation with a mother whose two-year-old was having a very messy restaurant lunch.

The "Disgusting Bib" Dilemma

While the market is flooded with silicone and fabric bibs, the daily reality for parents is often quite different. A loyal Parasol mom put it simply: "Why isn't there a bib that just works and then goes away?"

It turns out that even with so many options, the same problems kept surfacing:

  • The tradeoff: Fabric bibs feel soft but soak through quickly, while silicone bibs are waterproof but stiff, bulky, and uncomfortable to throw in a diaper bag for life-on-the-go.

  • The diaper-bag problem: A used bib from a 10:00 a.m. snack — whether fabric or silicone — often turns into a sticky, unhygienic mess by the time washing hour rolls around.

  • The cleanup burden: Between scrubbing silicone folds or remembering to wash fabric, cleanup can feel like a losing battle.

Medical-Grade Science Meets Mealtime

The solution was hiding in Parasol’s core diaper technology. By combining a super-soft, highly absorbent non-woven front with a waterproof polypropylene barrier on the back, we created a feather-light bib designed for real-world messes.

When parents were asked whether a disposable option would help, the response was a resounding yes. Life on the go — at restaurants, on flights, or during heavy teething days — requires tools that are thin, effective, and convenient. There are already enough things to carry. A bib shouldn’t be a burden.

Interactive Dining: The Placemat Evolution

During early testing, parents surfaced another familiar frustration: restaurant hygiene — and the inevitable milk spill or food mess across the table. That feedback sparked the development of our Disposable Table Placemats (available March 2026).

Designed to be more than just a barrier, the placemats became a canvas for learning:

  • Creativity at the table: High-contrast black-and-white designs encourage toddlers to color, trace, and play.

  • Educational moments: Simple food names and spellings spark curiosity while waiting for meals to arrive.

  • Double-layer protection: An absorbent top catches spills instantly, while the waterproof backing protects surfaces and keeps little hands away from unsanitized tables.

A Pro-Tip for First-Time Users

Because the design is intentionally clean and minimalist, it can be easy to mix up the front and back at first. Here’s how to get the best performance:

  • Make sure the soft, absorbent side faces out to catch liquids.

  • Flip the waterproof pouch forward to act as a crumb catcher.

  • Peel away the two adhesive tabs on the back to keep the bib securely in place.

Once you see it in action, the design makes intuitive sense!

Solving the Small Problems

Solving these “small” daily pain points is what makes product development meaningful. It’s not about chasing trends — it’s about listening closely to parents and applying material science in ways that make everyday life a little less messy.
